Collections Enquiries
The Museum upholds and promotes the principle of free access to collections and collections information in order to stimulate curiosity and promote knowledge.
We welcome enquiries about our collection and about Andrew Carnegie in general. Below are details of how you can access our collection and its associated information.
Do you accept donations/gifts to the collection?
We welcome offers to the collection, however our collecting is controlled by a strict Collections Development Policy to ensure our resources are appropriately expended.
All acquisitions are proposed to the board by the Museum Manager, who makes a recommendation to them in line with the policy’s strict collecting criteria
If you wish to offer us an object, please use the Collections Enquiry form. Try and give us as much information as possible about the object including what you know about its history and its current condition.
The Museum Assistants cannot accept objects from visitors, please do not visit the museum with the expectation of being able to donate and object on the spot. Any objects left at the museum without completed paperwork cannot be accepted for the collection. Please do not post us any objects without prior permission from the Museum Manager.
Can I make an appointment to see an item that is not on display?
Yes, appointments can be made to view items from the collection. We require ten working days’ notice for visits and research visits are dependent on staff time and resources.
Please use the Collections Enquiry form.
What research facilities do you have?
We do not have a dedicated research space. All research visits need to be facilitated by a member of collections staff and booked in advance.
If you are a student planning to use our collections as part of your dissertation or PhD, please contact us well in advance to ensure we can support you.
Do you have collection volunteer roles and student placements?
We offer collection-based voluntary opportunities. Find out more on the volunteering webpage.
Do you lend objects?
Yes, we lend objects from our collection for display in exhibitions at other museums; please use our Collections Enquiry form if you have a request.
